California Bighorn Sheep

We have surveyed population numbers, herd recruitment, migration patterns and predator impact for California Bighorn Sheep since 1991 and developed winter and summer range maps. This detailed data collection allows us to determine changes in the population of the sheep herds for wild sheep population management.

California Bighorn sheep are now recognized as a distinct subspecies of Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep. This relatively new classifciation makes it even more important that we are able to collect accurate population numbers to understand herd dynamics and influence wild sheep population management. Herd recruitment is a particularly important factor as we record how many lambs are born and survive to become yearlings the following year. Understanding if disease, predation or food availability is the limiting factor for lamb survival allows us to focus our conservation efforts on the area where it is needed most.
