Monitoring their numbers and movement is essential for effective conservation. By collecting hair samples, researchers can use DNA analysis to:
- Identify individual bears
- Estimate population size and genetic diversity
- Track movement patterns and habitat use
- Monitor changes in population health over time

The primary method for collecting grizzly bear hair involves the use of rub trees. Grizzly bears naturally rub against certain trees to mark their territory or communicate with other bears. When a bear rubs against the tree, small tufts of hair are snagged on branches, which can then be carefully collected for DNA analysis. Each sample is cataloged with location, date, and other relevant data, then sent to partner labs for genetic analysis.
